Happy summer and many thanks to everyone who participated in the 14th annual RI Butterfly Count on the East Bay on June 24th. Although the morning was a washout with all the rain, several of you persevered and went out in the afternoon or later in the week. Thank you very much!

The next count will be held on Saturday the 24th in the West Bay survey circles (which includes Providence). We still have several spots open for both private counts (lead your own) as well as public counts (join an experienced butterflyer). Please consider signing up to count on your own or join one of ours.... we need data and only you can help!

One note - please take pictures of your observations as much as possible! We can always use more images of butterflies.

Following is preliminary data from the East Bay survey circles, subject to verification, etc..

With the rain pouring down and snow in the forecast, today seems like a great day to post the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's 2016 Butterfly Report !! Perhaps reading the findings of all the hard work of dedicated butterfly observers will help us reflect on the warm summer days we spent traipsing through the fields counting butterflies, watching Red-tailed hawks circle overhead and picking out the different grasses.

To view the report look for the 2016 Butterfly Report under the heading of Butterfly Reports.

(If you are encountering broken links to previous Reports and other information we ask for your patience. We have made some website changes and are in the process of re-establishing the links. Please check back in a week.)

Thank you to everyone who participated last year; without your dedication and strong legs we would not have much data to share!

As noted in the previous blog, we covered a lot of territory across Rhode Island and even found more species than in previous years. Sadly the number of individual butterflies appears to be rather flat.

Please note that new butterfly enthusiasts are welcome... with open arms! We provide training PowerPoints and love to connect people with the wonderful world of butterflies. So if you have a friend who might be interested in helping in 2017, please invite them to view our blog and/or contact me with questions.

Stay warm!

I cannot believe that it has already been a year since the last Rhode Island Butterfly Count!

This year we have been fortunate to have a Conservation Intern! Jennifer LeBeau has been organizing this year's counts and is available to answer your questions and send you any information you may need. She is available at jlebeau@asri.org

This year the counts are as follows:
June 25th - East Bay locations:
Audubon Nature Center in Bristol
Nockum Hill Refuge in Barrington
Audubon Touisset Refuge in Warren

July 23rd - Providence & West Bay Counts:
Trustom Pond NAtional Wildlife Refuge in Charlestown
Audubon Powder Mill Ledges Refuge in Smithfield
Audubon Newman Refuge in Smithfield
Audubon Fisherville Refuge in Exeter

As a reminder, the following items are available on this site:
1) 2016 Butterfly Count Instructions
2) A list of public and private count sites (for folks to lead their own counts)
3) Resources and videos for identifying butterflies
4) A map showing the count circles of Rhode Island

The format of the counts is the same as in previous years -with the following exceptions:

PUBLIC Counts: Folks participating in a public count must register ahead of time. Please click HERE to register. There is a $5.00 fee that is passed on to the North american Butterfly Association.

PRIVATE Counts: Folks with the ability to identify butterflies can lead their own private walks (i.e. with friends or family members). A list of existing count locations is available in the resources column of his page (2016 Survey Site / Counter List) OR folks may choose a new location. Be sure to advise us of your site location and the results! If participants of a private count want to have their names included in the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) report for 2016 they need to pay$5.00 for every name. This fee is collected by Audubon and passed along to NABA. contact Jon or Jenn at jlebeau@asri.org with questions.

The staff of the Audubon Society of Rhode Island would like to extend their gratitude to everyone who was involved in last year's Rhode Island Butterfly Count!

We are fortunate to have excellent butterfly experts (some staff, some not) who donate their time to lead walks for the public. In addition, we have a great number of experts who survey their preferred site(s) each year on their own and send us their results, including some wonderful photographs! And of course we have a supportive public in Rhode Island who cherish butterflies and join the public walks and volunteer to help butterflies in many other ways. Our thanks to all of you!

The annual butterfly count is just around the corner and we are looking for some experienced butterfly counters to conduct some private counts (meaning the public is not joining you).

If you have reasonable skill at counting identifying butterflies and are interested in spending a Saturday morning having some fun, please contact Jon Scoones at jscoones@asri.org for more information.

To check out the sites needing counters, go to Audubon's butterfly blog and open the Map of Survey Circles. Look for the locations denoted by the green pins.

Thank you and happy butterflying!

This is a great opportunity for anyone (both beginners and pros are welcome) to be a citizen scientist. Spend half a day outdoors learning about butterflies and counting them. Audubon naturalists will lead each team, teach folks how to identify butterflies and how to conduct a butterfly survey. The naturalists will also record the data and submit it to Audubon which will compile your observations and relay them to the North American Butterfly Association (NABA) for inclusion in their research and annual report.

I will be sending out a note to past participants and leaders this week to determine if you will be joining us again this year. So if you do not receive a note, please reach out to me at jscoones@asri.org or 401-949-5454 x3044.
Although the East Bay survey seemed to result in some lower than typical numbers, the West Bay count appears to have done a bit better. Once I have everyone's data I will release a preliminary, unofficial count.

Join Audubon Society of Rhode Island naturalists and other butterfly enthusiasts for the 11th annual North American Butterfly Association (NABA) Butterfly Count, held on June 28 and July 12, 2014. Beginners are welcome on these naturalist-led walks that teach butterfly identification and promote the understanding of butterfly ecology in our state.

“This is the eleventh year we have hosted the butterfly count,” said Scott Ruhren, Audubon’s Senior Director of Conservation. “We’re excited to get out in the field and see just how many species we can find. Participants can choose from seven beautiful locations across the state with known butterfly populations. Team members help to spot butterflies and our naturalists will record them and provide identification tips. Before long, everyone on the team will is identifying different butterfly species. It’s a fun way to learn about these beautiful creatures.”

All naturalist-led walks meet at 10:00 am and most finish at 12:00 pm, the complete schedule is listed below. There is a suggested donation of $3 to support the North American Butterfly Association. All participants must register to receive survey protocols and to confirm sites within the survey areas. The Rhode Island Butterfly Count is part of a larger effort, coordinated by the North American Butterfly Association, to survey butterflies in North America. Data collected from the Rhode Island Butterfly Count is compiled and published in an annual report. The 2013 report contains the results of the 2013 survey and a review of the entire 2013 butterfly season. It is available at http://goo.gl/Uu27qFUnknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-382848149641174693.post-72339076302611338412013-08-29T19:26:00.001-07:002013-08-29T19:27:11.990-07:00The 2013 RI Butterfly Count Results are in! The final numbers:

50 Species
3216 individual butterflies

Some interesting notes:

The weather was poor for both counts--fog and cool temperatures for the East Bay Count, and rain for the West Bay Count. The fact that we found as many butterflies as we did is surprising and indicates a good year in general for butterflies.

The number of Monarchs seen, 23, is the lowest we have ever found on the count. The highest number was recorded in 2012: 487 Monarchs.

A Sachem skipper was found at Trustom Pond. This is an accidental/vagrant species in Rhode Island and has never before been recorded on the count.
